Kingsum Chow (周经森)

Researcher and Ph.D. supervisor at Zhejiang University (since March 2023). Director of SPAIL. CEO of Youtune.tech.

I received my Ph.D. from the School of Computer Science and Engineering, University of Washington, in 1996 (Advisor: ACM/IEEE Fellow David Notkin). I have worked as Chief Scientist at Alibaba (2016–2022) and as Principal Engineer at Intel in the USA (1996–2016). My research interests are software-hardware co-optimization and system performance analytics. The work has accumulated industry savings of over USD 20 billion and optimized tens of millions of servers worldwide, including Double-11 peak workloads. I have 135+ papers and 74 patents (24 granted US patents). I have delivered keynotes at major conferences including four appearances at JavaOne. I led Project Apollo in the Intel-Oracle collaboration for the 2015 launch of Oracle Cloud. I represented Alibaba in the election for the JCP EC (Java Community Process Executive Committee) (2018-2022) and was the first to bring a Chinese company into the world's Java authority. At Alibaba I led the development of the performance analysis platform SPEED (System Performance Estimation, Evaluation and Decision).

PIPA (Platform for Integrated Performance Analytics) — A unified framework designed to describe, analyze, and optimize system performance across heterogeneous architectures.

Dr. Chow has led large-scale, high-impact collaborations with global technology leaders. The projects he has spearheaded accumulated a total budget exceeding 160 million CNY (over 20 million USD).

  • Heterogeneous Serverless Optimization (2024–2026): Performance modeling and optimization with Alibaba, Kuaishou, ByteDance, and Ampere.
  • Project Meta (Intel & Meta, 2022–2023): Major leadership initiative in advanced system research.
  • Alibaba SPEED (2018–2020): Led the development of the System Performance Estimation, Evaluation and Decision platform.
  • Alibaba Dragonwell JDK (2018–2019): Development and optimization of Alibaba's Java Development Kit.
  • Project Apollo (Intel & Oracle, 2014–2016): Led the collaboration for the 2015 Oracle Cloud launch.
  • Oracle Exalytics Memory Optimization (2013–2014): Performance optimization for Oracle's in-memory analytics system.
  • Intel P6 Microcode Simulator (1993–1994): Performance simulator for Intel's P6 microcode.
